Calendar 19-10-2005 Suzuki Motor open to joint R&D with firms outside GM group
MAKUHARI (AFX) - Suzuki Motor Corp said that it is open to joint research and development initiatives with firms other than General Motors Corp, which controls the Japanese maker of small cars.

"Research and development of new technologies are a type of initiative that require time and patience. Possibilities of joint R&D must be explored actively," the chairman and chief executive of Suzuki, Osamu Suzuki, told reporters at the Tokyo Motor Show, being held here east of the capital.

"We are not limiting ourselves to GM. Research and development should be done with various firms. We should think about things flexibly," he said.

"Be it hybrids or fuel cell technologies, we must research various technologies," he said.

GM recently backed out of a partnership with another Japanese automaker, selling a stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subaru vehicles, to Toyota Motor Corp.

Suzuki said his firm has maintained close ties with GM and that he does not expect the US group to cut existing ties with Suzuki.

Suzuki said his firm has created a platform that can fit all hybrid, fuel cell and gasoline engine technologies -- as all three types of engines are likely to continue to exist in the foreseeable future.

"We now live in an era where all three technologies are available. I do not think the three technologies would eventually become one," he said.

"Unless we create a common platform that can carry all three types, we thought we might not become profitable," he said.

"It was an invention born out of the difficulty we face as a small-car maker."
